Paula Abdul Not Coming Back to 'X Factor'?

And then there were two! Paula Abdul has just become the third member of the The X Factor who is reported to not be returning to the show.

Steve Jones Out as X Factor Host

According to Deadline, the singer is leaving the singing competition, and not on her own volition.

Nicole Scherzinger Also Leaves X Factor

The news source claims that the move to dismiss Paula, Nicole Scherzinger and Steve Jones was done in an effort to improve ratings.

As of now, the only judges left from the show's first season are Simon Cowell, the show's creator, and L.A. Reid.

No, Newt did not endorse the Obamacare mandate - Le?gal In?sur ...

The blog Verum Serum claims to have found?an audio recording showing that Newt Gingrich supported Obama?s federal mandate, in a?post titled Gingrich Called for ObamaCare Mandate in May 2009?.

Breitbart TV?picked up on that theme, asserting ?this is the first example of Gingrich specifically endorsing President Barack Obama?s federally mandated version which many conservatives believe is unconstitutional and Gingrich has described as ?clearly unconstitutional.?

This is wrong.? I have listened to the entire audio recording, and Newt does not endorse the Obamacare mandate, in part because the speech took place before even the earliest draft of Obamacare had been proposed.

The actual discussion in the recording?is nothing new, listen for yourself, it?shows Newt saying what he has said before about not allowing free riders at hospitals including either having insurance or showing that you have the ability to pay.? You can like it or not, but it?s not new or news, as Verum Serum acknowledges in its post.

The recording does not support the conclusion?that Newt supported Obama?s federal mandate, which uses the police powers of the state to force people to buy insurance or face penalties.

At the time of Newt?s presentation, in May 2009, the earliest versions of Obamacare had not yet been released.? Newt specifically notes that the details of what would be proposed were unknown and (at 27:00) the process was still in the ?wish list press conference stage.?

The initial version of Obamacare was not released until early June 2009.? My first blog post about the early draft (the Senate?HELP?Committee version)?of Obamacare was on June 16?regarding the CBO assessment.? Various iterations of Obamacare were proposed throughout June?-August.? The Obamacare legislation and mandate eventually focused on using the IRS?as the enforcer.

The Verum Serum recording was before there was a specific proposal, much less a specific Obamacare mandate which turned into enforcement through tax returns and penalties.

It is not true, at least not based on the May 2009 recording posted at Verum Serum, that Newt supported the Obamacare mandate.

Update:? Ugh, Breitbart TV doubles down, ?But, newly discovered audio from a conference call in May 2009 shows that Mr. Gingrich praised the individual mandate put forth by President Obama.?

29 Chinese missing after militant attack in Sudan

(AP) ? Militants apparently captured 29 Chinese workers after attacking a remote worksite in a volatile region of Sudan, and Sudanese forces were increasing security for Chinese projects and personnel there, China said Sunday.

China has close political and economic relations with Sudan, especially in the energy sector.

The Foreign Ministry in Beijing said the militants attacked Saturday and Sudanese forces launched a rescue mission Sunday in coordination with the Chinese embassy in Khartoum.

The Ministry's head of consular affairs met with the Sudanese ambassador in Beijing and "urged him to actively conduct rescue missions under the prerequisite of ensuring the safety of the Chinese personnel," the statement said.

In Khartoum, a Chinese embassy spokesman said the northern branch of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement announced that 29 Chinese workers had been captured in the attack. The spokesman, who asked not be identified, gave no other details and it wasn't clear if the militants had demanded conditions for their return.

Other details weren't given. The official Xinhua News Agency cited the state governor as saying the Sudan People's Liberation Army attacked a road-building site in South Kordofan and seized the workers.

The Sudan People's Liberation Army are a guerrilla force loyal to the southern movement and hail from a minority ethnic group now in control of much of South Sudan, which became the world's newest country only six months ago in a breakaway from Sudan.

Sudan has accused South Sudan of arming pro-South Sudan groups in South Kordofan. The government of South Sudan has called such accusations a smoke screen intended to justify a future invasion of the South.

China has sent large numbers of workers to potentially unstable regions such as Sudan and last year was forced to send ships and planes to help with the emergency evacuation of 30,000 of its citizens from the fighting in Libya.

China has consistently used its clout in diplomatic forums such as the United Nations to defend Sudan and its longtime leader Omar al-Bashir. In recent years, it has also sought to build good relations with leaders from the south, where most of Sudan's oil is located.

Chinese companies have also invested heavily in Sudanese oil production, along with companies India and elsewhere.

Want your enemies to trust you? Put on your baby face

ScienceDaily (Jan. 29, 2012) ? Do baby-faced opponents have a better chance of gaining your trust? By subtly altering fictional politicians' faces, researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem examined whether minor changes in appearance can affect people's judgment about "enemy" politicians and their offer to make peace. In the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the research showed that peace offers from baby-faced politicians had a better chance of winning over the opposing population than the exact same offer coming from more mature-looking leaders.

"The Face of the Enemy: The Effect of Press-reported Visual Information Regarding the Facial Features of Opponent-politicians on Support for Peace" was authored by Dr. Ifat Maoz, Associate Professor in the Noah Mozes Department of Communication and Journalism, and Head of the Smart Family Institute of Communications, at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Prof. Maoz provided Jewish-Israeli respondents with a fictional news item containing a peace proposal and a fictional Palestinian leader's photograph. The photograph was manipulated to appear as either baby-faced or mature by making a 15% change in the size of eyes and lips. Respondents were then asked to evaluate the peace offer and rate the trustworthiness of the politician who offered it.

Although both images were based on the same original, the baby-faced politician was judged as more trustworthy and his peace proposal received greater support than the same offer from the mature-faced politician.

"People generally associate a baby face with attributes of honesty, openness and acceptance," explains Prof. Maoz, "and once you trust your adversary, you have a greater willingness to reach a compromise."

Previous studies have shown that viewers can form judgments of trustworthiness after as little as 100 milliseconds of exposure to a novel face. Certain facial features evoke feelings of warmth, trust and cooperation while minimizing feelings of threat and competition. People with babyish facial characteristics like large eyes, round chin and pudgy lips are perceived as kinder, more honest and more trustworthy than mature-faced people with small eyes, square jaws, and thin lips. Baby-faced people also produce more agreement with their positions.

But while past research indicates that the appearance of politicians from one's own country affects attitudes and voting intentions, this is the first study that systematically examines the impact of politicians' faces from the opposing side in a conflict.

These conclusions are especially important as the dominance of TV and Internet, combined with the proliferation of photo-ops, photo-shopping and image consultants, means politicians' faces are seen more than ever and their appearance has a greater chance of affecting the impressions, attitudes and opinions of media consumers.

The study also gauged how manipulating facial features affected populations with different pre-existing attitudes, by overcoming hawkish and dovish participants' resistance to change and increasing their perceptions of opponents as trustworthy. Surprisingly, while study participants with hawkish positions held markedly negative initial attitudes towards peace and the opponents in a conflict -- attitudes that tend to be rigid and resistant to change -- they showed a more significant response than dovish respondents to differences in facial maturity.

The study suggests that in situations of protracted conflict, the face of the enemy matters. Visual information conveying subtle, undetected changes in facial physiognomy were powerful enough to influence perceivers' judgments of the opponent-politician and of the proposal he presented for resolving the conflict.

The findings of this study also have important practical implications regarding the mobilization of public opinion in support of conflict resolution. Previous research has shown that images of politicians are often manipulated in media coverage to appear more or less favorable and that such manipulations affect citizens' attitudes and voting intentions towards politicians from their own state and country. This study shows that manipulating the favorability of media images of opponent political leaders in intractable conflict may also have a marked effect on public attitudes, and that media coverage presenting favorable images of opponent leaders may have the potential to mobilize public support for conflict resolution through compromise.

Prof. Maoz adds that there are situations in which a baby-face is not advantageous: "Although features of this type can lend politicians an aura of sincerity, openness and receptiveness, at the same time they can communicate a lack of assertiveness. So people tend to prefer baby-faced politicians as long they represent the opposing side, while on their own side they prefer representatives who look like they know how to stand their ground."

PFT: Finally, Kolber addresses Namath incident

joe-namathGetty Images

For many younger football fans, the name ?Joe Namath? doesn?t conjure memories of Broadway Joe or Super Bowl III but a drunken pass at ESPN sideline reporter Suzy Kolber during a December 2003 edition of Sunday Night Football.? His ?I wanna kiss you? moment became the stuff of TV legend, even making its way into an epic auto-tune mash-up from D.J. Steve Porter, who coincidentally now crafts similar projects for the four-letter network.

In an HBO documentary on Namath?s life, which debuted at 9:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, Kolber addresses the incident for the first time.? Without saying ?don?t blame us, we didn?t know Joe was drunk,? she seems to try a little too hard to offer up not-so-subtle excuses for not knowing Joe was drunk, even though perhaps everyone involved should have known, or at least suspected, that Joe was drunk.

Especially once he started talking.

?Joe was escorted onto the field by a number of Jets personnel,? Kolber says of the subject of her eventual interview.? ?And what I recall is that he and I never really had a chance to chat, because he wouldn?t stand still.?

Kolber creates the impression that she didn?t have any opportunity to observe his behavior (Namath admits that he?d been drinking all day and night) until the interview started.? ?When we were really getting to close to when our producer wanted to have him on, I took his arm because I just didn?t want him to walk away,? Kolber says.

And even when the interview began, Kolber explains (with her trademark perky nonchalance) that no one thought anything was amiss as he gave a stumbling, incomprehensible answer to the first question:? ?What impresses you about Chad [Pennington]??

?I believe that anything anyone else has watched Chad play impresses me the same thing impresses them,? Namath said at the time, clumsily and awkwardly.

She attributed his off-kilter behavior to, yes, the weather.? ?When we first started talking and he was slow and deliberate in his speech,? Kolber says, ?what was going through my head was, ?Maybe it?s just really cold.??

But here?s the kicker from Kolber, the thing that made me think for the first time that ESPN adroitly has been able to avoid for more than eight years the question of how they put him on the air in the first place, and why they didn?t kill the interview after his initial rambling response.? ?None of the executives in the truck were alarmed either, because nobody said, ?Stop,?? Kolber says.? ?The direction in my ear was, ?Keep going.??

None of this changes the fact that Namath was at fault for drinking too much and agreeing to go on camera and then acting like a jerk by saying ?I wanna kiss you,? not once but twice.? But I?ve been involved in the TV side of this business long enough now to realize that there are (or at least should be) layers of folks who when trouble pops up can make good decisions in the blink of an eye, or even faster.? Still, until seeing Kolber?s roundabout effort to help ESPN continue to sidestep shrapnel for allowing the ?I wanna kiss you? moment to happen by not ending the interview (or by never doing it in the first place), I never made the connection.? Joe was always the bad guy, and ESPN and Kolber were always without blame of any kind.

After hearing Kolber?s explanation, I?m starting to think that maybe a few tougher questions should have been asked back in late 2003.? It?ll be interesting to see if any of those questions are asked now.

Gingrich unloads on Romney, ads, in Florida speech (AP)

MOUNT DORA, Fla. ? Newt Gingrich on Thursday dramatically ramped up his attacks on Mitt Romney, saying the former Massachusetts governor is guilty of lies, desperation and hypocrisy that should make "every American angry."

Gingrich, the former House speaker, said he was infuriated by a barrage of attack ads that are blistering him on Florida TV stations ahead of Tuesday's GOP presidential primary. Most are funded by an outside organization backing Romney, but some are from Romney's own campaign. Unable to match Romney's money machine, Gingrich implored Florida Republicans to punish his chief rival for what Gingrich called callously dishonest ads.

"This is the desperate last stand of the old order," Gingrich told an outdoor crowd of more than 1,000 northwest of Orlando. "This is the kind of gall they have to think we're so stupid and we're so timid."

The nature and volume of the attack ads are similar to those that badly damaged Gingrich in Iowa a month ago.

"I think all the weight of his negative advertising and all the weight of his dishonesty has hurt us some," Gingrich said. But "I am not going to allow the moneyed interests that are buying those ads to come in here and to come into other states to misinform people and then to think we are too dumb to fight back."

Romney steered clear of his rival during a subsequent campaign appearance.

Gingrich later told reporters he decided to sharpen his criticisms after Romney's tax returns showed investments held in Cayman Island accounts, the government-backed mortgage company Freddie Mac and other entities.

"Here's a guy who owns Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae stock," Gingrich said. "He owns a Goldman Sachs subsidiary, which is foreclosing on Floridians. And on that front he decides to lie about my career? There's something about the hypocrisy that should make every American angry."

Romney has been hammering Gingrich for consulting work he performed for Freddie Mac and telling Florida voters that Gingrich was paid by a company that contributed to the state's poor housing market.

The acerbic remarks came three days after Gingrich took a much more moderate tone in a televised debate in Tampa, when Romney sharpened his own attacks. Gingrich strongly hinted he will be more aggressive in a CNN debate scheduled for Thursday night in Jacksonville.

Romney, meanwhile, toured a Jacksonville factory that is closing because of the economy before he addressed several hundred people gathered outside. He acknowledged that the live audience at Thursday's debate may be fairly raucous, a dynamic that seems to favor Gingrich and his populist, us-against-the-media and us-against-the-establishment style.

"There may be some give and take," Romney said. "That's always fun and entertaining, I know. If you all could get there, we'd love to see you all there cheering."

In his remarks, Romney criticized President Barack Obama and steered clear of Gingrich. He called Obama's administration a "Groundhog Day" presidency in which nothing gets better.

Polls suggest the Florida primary is close, coming 10 days after Gingrich beat Romney by 12 percentage points in South Carolina. Asked if he felt Florida was slipping toward Romney, Gingrich said, "I feel that it's useful for people to look at the totality of his record and ask yourself, `How can a guy who literally owns stock in a Goldman Sachs investment fund that forecloses on Floridians run the ads he's been running?'"

Goldman Sachs employees and their families contributed $367,200 to Romney's campaign through Sept. 30, his largest source of campaign contributions, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and Texas Rep. Ron Paul also were participating in Thursday's debate, the final one before the GOP presidential primary in Florida on Tuesday. But both candidates have set their sights elsewhere and have largely stayed away from the Romney-Gingrich drama.

Whoever wins Florida will score something no one has yet claimed in a tumultuous primary season: a second victory. The first three contests have been won by three different candidates. Only Paul has yet to score a win.

The hits for Romney and Gingrich were coming from many directions.

The "super" political action committees backing them have spent more than $10 million combined on ads to date in Florida, far more than their respective campaigns. The Romney-leaning Restore Our Future has spent $8.8 million in ads as of late Tuesday, bringing to $14 million the total spent on ads supporting Romney in the state. That doesn't include money already spent on radio and Internet advertising.

As of late Tuesday, the Gingrich-backing Winning Our Future had booked $1.8 million in television ads in Florida, a check made possible by a new donation from Miriam Adelson. She and her husband, Sheldon, this month gave $5 million apiece to the group, which supports Gingrich but legally must remain independent.

Santorum, meanwhile, seemed to be recognizing that he stood almost no chance of winning Florida. He and his advisers planned no advertising in the state and instead were focused on raising money and calling potential supporters in upcoming states. He all but gave up trying to woo a network of pastors and was scaling back his schedule in Florida.

Chuck Laudner, an influential adviser who helped Santorum score an upset victory in the Iowa caucuses, was returning to the Midwest to start piecing together coalitions in Missouri and Minnesota. Both states have media markets that overlap with Iowa, where Santorum proved to be the big story.

Paul, virtually absent from Florida except for appearances built around the debates, was concentrating instead on caucus states where his loyal backers can carry a louder voice.

Are you a happy shopper? Research website helps you find out

ScienceDaily (Jan. 26, 2012) ? Psychologists have found that buying life experiences makes people happier than buying possessions, but who spends more of their spare cash on experiences? New findings published this week in the Journal of Positive Psychology reveal extraverts and people who are open to new experiences tend to spend more of their disposable income on experiences, such as concert tickets or a weekend away, rather than hitting the mall for material items.

These habitual "experiential shoppers" reaped long-term benefits from their spending: They reported greater life satisfaction, according to the study led by San Francisco State University Assistant Professor of Psychology Ryan Howell.

To further investigate how purchasing decisions impact well-being, Howell and colleagues have launched a website where members of the public can take free surveys to find out what kind of shopper they are and how their spending choices affect them. Data collected through the "Beyond the Purchase" website will be used by Howell and other social psychologists.

Graduate students in Howell's Personality and Well-being Lab will use the site to study the link between spending motivations and well-being, and how money management influences our financial and purchasing choices.

For his latest study, Howell and colleagues surveyed nearly10,000 participants, who completed online questionnaires about their shopping habits, personality traits, values and life satisfaction.

"We know that being an 'experience shopper' is linked to greater wellbeing," said Howell, whose 2009 paper on purchasing experiences, published in the Journal of Positive Psychology, challenged the adage that money can't buy happiness. "But we wanted to find out why some people gravitate toward buying experiences."

Participants' personality was measured using the "Big Five" personality traits model, a scale psychologists use to describe how extraverted, neurotic, open, conscientious and agreeable a person is. People who spent most of their disposable income on experiences scored highly on the "extravert" and "openness to new experience" scales.

"This personality profile makes sense since life experiences are inherently more social, and they also contain an element of risk," Howell said. "If you try a new experience that you don't like, you can't return it to the store for a refund."

The authors suggest that it could be easier to change your spending habits than your personality traits. "Even for people who naturally find themselves drawn to material purchases, our results suggest that getting more of a balance between traditional purchases and those that provide you with an experience could lead to greater life satisfaction and wellbeing."

AT&T posts 4Q loss on charges; revenue increases (AP)

NEW YORK ? AT&T Inc. is still the home of the iPhone. It activated 7.6 million of them in the latest quarter, accounting for one out of every five iPhones sold globally.

And AT&T remains heavily dependent on the iPhone to gain and keep customers, despite a vow by CEO Randall Stephenson a year ago to "very aggressively" market competing smartphones in 2011. That vow came in the wake of AT&T's loss of an exclusive right to sell the iPhone in the U.S.

The iPhone accounted for about 80 percent of the smartphones AT&T activated in the fourth quarter of 2011, up from 70 percent just before Stephenson made his vow.

The figures are somewhat skewed because the fourth quarter of 2011 saw the launch of a new iPhone model, the iPhone 4S, whereas the fourth quarter of 2010 didn't. Looking at annual sales instead, there's a decline in the iPhone's percentage of AT&T smartphones ? to 69 percent last year, from 79 percent in 2010.

The Dallas-based company has also retained its position as the premier U.S. iPhone carrier, beating Verizon Wireless' 4.3 million iPhone activations handily.

AT&T's iPhone dependency comes at a heavy cost. The phone is more expensive than many other smartphones, and AT&T needs to subsidize each iPhone with hundreds of dollars to put it in customers' hands for as little as $1.

That, together with massive charges for adjustments in the value of the company's pension plans, the breakup of a deal to buy T-Mobile USA and a writedown of the value of its phone-directory business, forced AT&T to report a massive loss on Thursday of $6.68 billion, or $1.12 per share, for the fourth quarter.

It was the first quarterly loss for AT&T in three years. An adjustment of pension-plan obligations was also the main culprit behind the previous loss, in the fourth quarter of 2008.

AT&T took a charge of $4.2 billion for the compensation it's paying T-Mobile USA. When AT&T made the $39 billion bid in March, it promised T-Mobile cash and wireless licenses if the deal fell through. The deal was squelched by federal regulators, who saw reason to believe that the No. 2 wireless carrier buying No. 4 would reduce competition.

On Thursday, Stephenson said the company's Plan B consists of trying to buy more wireless spectrum in smaller deals, selling low-performing units and instituting a share-buyback program.

AT&T said it has board authorization to buy back 300 million shares, worth about $9 billion, and will start doing so immediately.

Excluding charges, net income was 42 cents per share in the latest quarter, a penny shy of Wall Street expectations, according to a survey by FactSet.

The loss compares with net income of $1.09 billion, or 18 cents per share, in the same period a year earlier.

Revenue rose 3.6 percent to $32.5 billion, helped by the smartphone sales. Analysts were expecting revenue of $31.99 billion, on average.

After stripping out the jump in smartphone sales, which constitute an immediate loss for the company, revenue grew 0.6 percent from last year. Wireless service fees are growing slower than before, barely making up for the decline of AT&T's traditional-phone business.

AT&T said it expects earnings per share to grow by a mid-single-digit percentage in 2012, a bit lower than analysts had expected.

In afternoon trading Thursday, shares of AT&T Inc. fell 68 cents, or 2.3 percent, to $29.53.

Most of the iPhone activations were upgrades for people who were already AT&T subscribers. The carrier gained a net 717,000 subscribers on contract plans in the quarter. That was the best result all year, but didn't match Verizon's 1.2 million. AT&T has been lagging Verizon in this important measure for more than a year.

For all of 2011, AT&T earned $3.9 billion, or 66 cents per share, on $126.7 billion in revenue. That compares with $19.9 billion, or $3.35 per share, on $124.3 billion in revenue in 2010.

Russia launches cargo spaceship (AP)

MOSCOW ? Russia's space agency says an unmanned cargo ship carrying 2.6 tons of supplies and equipment has lifted off for the International Space Station.

Roskosmos says the Progress M-14M blasted off early Thursday from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan atop a Soyuz-U booster rocket.

The ship is scheduled to dock at the space station early Saturday with a cargo of oxygen, food, scientific equipment and gifts for the crew.

The space station's six members include three Russians, two Americans and a Dutchman.

The decade-old station is orbiting about 225 miles (360 kilometers) above Earth and consists of 13 modules.

GOP Debate Features a Wrangle About Gingrich and Freddie Mac (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | During the Republican presidential debate in Tampa, Fla., Mitt Romney went on the attack against his main rival, Newt Gingrich. Romney has been knocked off his perch as front-runner thanks to his defeat in the South Carolina primary.

The Ticket reports Romney attacked Gingrich on a number of fronts. He suggested the former speaker was forced to resign in disgrace from Congress thanks to his erratic leadership during his four-year speakership. Romney accused Gingrich of being an influence peddler thanks to his work for Freddie Mac.

Then, is a weird twist, Romney said Gingrich's tax proposal would be too easy on millionaires who make their money from returns on investment and not earned income. Romney has published his tax returns showing that he was able to take the 15 percent rate on investment income rather than the higher rate on earned income on salaries or corporate income.

The reason this is weird is Romney has accused Gingrich of running down capitalism because of the latter's attack on his career of CEO of Bain Capital. Suggesting that, in effect, Gingrich was in favor of "tax cuts for the rich" sounded an awful lot like something President Obama would say.

Gingrich was having none of the attacks, particularly about his work for Freddie Mac. Romney and his surrogates have been accusing Gingrich of being a lobbyist for Freddie Mac. This is a devastating accusation since the near collapse of Freddie Mac has been blamed partly for the economic slowdown that still afflicts the United States.

Gingrich countered by producing the contract he signed with Freddie Mac, pointing out that his role was listed as that of "consultant" and not lobbyist. Romney and Gingrich then engaged in a wrangle whether a consultant was just a lobbyist by any other name. At times the argument became mind numbing.

Fortunately, the debate also touched on issues, great and obscure. A question was even asked about the space program, with Romney and Gingrich giving detailed answers. Other questions included Cuba, the death of Terri Schiavo, and the meaning of conservatism in the current election cycle.

Hearse used after JFK slain in Dallas sells (AP)

DALLAS ? The man who paid $176,000 for the white hearse used to transport President John F. Kennedy's body following his assassination in Dallas plans to include it in his collection of about 400 cars in Colorado.

Stephen Tebo, a collector and real estate developer from Boulder, bought the hearse Saturday that was being offered by Barrett-Jackson Auction Co. of Scottsdale, Ariz. It sold for a bid of $160,000, plus a $16,000 buyer's premium.

The 1964 Cadillac hearse carried Kennedy's body as well as first lady Jacqueline Kennedy from Parkland Memorial Hospital to Air Force One at Dallas' Love Field for the flight back to Washington on Nov. 22, 1963, according to the auction company.

"It was a solemn duty that it had taking him from the hospital where he was pronounced dead to Air Force One," said Craig Jackson, CEO and chairman of the auction company. "I think everybody in the world remembers watching the hearse leave the hospital, heading toward Air Force One. It just sort of sunk into everybody that he's gone."

The hearse had been on display at a funeral home directors' convention in Dallas in October 1963, the auction company said. After the convention, O'Neal Funeral Home of Dallas bought the hearse. It was that funeral home that was called upon to transport the president's body.

In the late 1960s, the hearse was bought by Arrdeen Vaughan, a Texas man who owns funeral homes and a funeral vehicle business. He kept it in a private collection for more than four decades before selling it to the person who eventually put it up for auction.

Tebo said he plans to turn his car collection into a museum, hopefully in five to 10 years. The collection in Longmont, just outside of Boulder, is not currently open to the public, but Tebo does open it up four times a year to different nonprofit groups to help them raise money.

Other cars in his collection include a 1965 Rolls Royce custom made for John Lennon, a taxi used in the TV show "Seinfeld" and a jeep Frank Sinatra used on his ranch.

Tebo said he had expected the hearse would sell for anywhere from $500,000 to $1 million, so he wasn't planning on bidding. But he jumped it when he saw the bids weren't likely to go that high. As a collector, he said he tries to buy significant vehicles when possible.

Tebo said he wanted the hearse because of its historical significance.

"We remember specifically seeing the hearse leaving the hospital and driving very, very slowing to Air Force One and loading the casket on Air Force One. It was just an incredibly dramatic time in our lives," Tebo said.

Team arrives as campus farewell for Paterno begins (AP)

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ? Members of the Penn State football team and the athletic department have arrived at the campus faith center, where a viewing is being held Tuesday for Joe Paterno.

The players wore dark suits and filed out of three blue Penn State buses ? the same buses that once carried Paterno and the team to games on fall Saturdays. Son Scott Paterno was seen coming in and out of the center.

The 85-year-old Paterno, the winningest coach in major college football, died Sunday. He disclosed his lung cancer in November, days after he was fired in the aftermath of the child sex-abuse charges against former assistant Jerry Sandusky.

This marked the start of three days of public events as the Penn State community in State College and beyond said goodbye to the man who led the Nittany Lions to 409 wins over 46 years.

Big crowds were expected to show their love for Paterno, starting with a 10-hour public viewing at 1 p.m. EST. The viewing on campus is at the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center, with another public viewing Wednesday. After that, Paterno's family will hold a private funeral and procession through State College.

On Thursday, the school's basketball arena will be the site of a public service called "A Memorial for Joe." Penn State was expecting a huge demand for seats and set a two-per-person limit on tickets.

Scott Paterno said despite the turmoil, Paterno remained peaceful and upbeat in his final days and still loved the school.

The revered coach was fired Nov. 9 after he was criticized over his handling of the allegations against Sandusky in 2002. Pennsylvania's state police commissioner said in not going to the police, Paterno may have met his legal duty but not his moral one.

Bitterness over Paterno's removal has turned up in many forms, from online postings to a rewritten newspaper headline placed next to Paterno's statue at the football stadium blaming the trustees for his death. A headline that read "FIRED" was crossed out and made to read, "Killed by Trustees." Lanny Davis, lawyer for the school's board, said threats have been made against the trustees.

Scott Paterno, however, stressed his father did not die with a broken heart and did not harbor resentment toward Penn State.

President Obama to answer questions via a live Google+ Hangout (Yahoo! News)

The president will use the group video chat tool to field questions on Monday, January 30

Just days after the White House?joined Google+, President Obama has announced that he'll be putting one of the social network's most unique features to good use. In Google+, members of the social network can participate in group video chats using the site's aptly named?Hangouts feature. As a follow-up to Tuesday's 2012?State of the Union address, Obama has invited users to submit questions on its official?YouTube page for the Hangout,?will take place on Monday, January 30.

As another video product under Google's wing, Hangouts tie in closely with YouTube. In a Hangout, up to ten users can chat seamlessly, including the user who convenes the Hangout ? in this case, Obama himself. Hangouts feature a few cool tricks, like the ability to automatically highlight the G+ user who is speaking at any given moment and slick integration with YouTube that lets all ten users simultaneously watch a video on YouTube, right in the chat window itself.

If you're interested in getting heard ? or being one of the nine attendees featured in the group video chat ? submit your best questions as we gear up for tomorrow's State of the Union address, which you can?watch live online, tomorrow at 9 p.m. Eastern.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama saluted the NHL's Boston Bruins for their 2011 Stanley Cup championship on Monday, citing the city's run of professional team championships in recent years.

The Bruins won their first Stanley Cup title in 39 years last June after a bruising seven-game final series against the Vancouver Canucks.

It was the latest in a string of Boston sports championships, including the Celtics in 2008, the Red Sox in 2007 and the New England Patriots in 2005. The Patriots play in next month's Super Bowl.

"The Bruins, the Sox, the Celtics, now the Patriots. Enough already, Boston," Obama said during a ceremony in the East Room of the White House. "What's going on, huh?"

Obama also jokingly invoked some New England slang in welcoming the Bruins, along with the Stanley Cup, to the White House.

"I know you are all wicked happy to be here," he said.

The president said there was no better image of the Bruins' dominance than when Zdeno Chara, the team's 6-foot-9 defenseman, hoisted the Stanley Cup above his head in Vancouver in celebration last spring.

"Which is, I'm sure, the highest that the Stanley Cup had ever been," he said.

Obama drew laughter from the crowd when he cited the scrappy play of Bruins forward Brad Marchand, who emerged as a star with five goals in the last five games of the finals against Vancouver.

"'The 'Little Ball of Hate' shrugged off the rookie jitters," said Obama, adding "What's up with that nickname, man?"

There was a notable no-show. Goalie Tim Thomas, who was the playoff MVP last year, chose not to attend the event, a team spokesman said.

Obama praised the teamwork of the six-time champions.

"Together, these players proved that teamwork is everything," he said. "It can overcome injuries, it can overcome long odds."

Obama praised the team for its work off the ice as well, noting the Boston Bruins Foundation has donated more than $7 million to charities in New England.

The Breast Advice Insurance Can Buy | Heeb

An Israeli insurance company, Meuhedet,?has published a booklet designed to educate patients on ?special women?s cancer.? That?s because breast cancer is too titilating of a name to be used in haredi communities. Ovarian, uterin, and cervical cancers were offended by the euphemism, protesting, ?What? We aren?t special?!?

The totally unfunny part is that at-risk women aren?t getting the facts. Not only is the affected body part never mentioned, there are also no accurate drawings to explain how to do a breast self-examination. With breast being the most common form of cancer in Israel affecting 4,000 new female patients and 50 new male patients a year, perhaps some women out there would rather know the risks and live? Then again, there are fragile male minds to think of.

How can these men take this problem seriously if they?re too busy getting aroused by such sexy terms? Yes, a part of me understands the need for the word substitution.?Cancer is a serious matter, and I for one can?t hear the word breast without tittering like a school girl. If Meuhedet Insurance wants people to take cancer seriously, they have to treat it seriously. They can?t have patients getting distracted by tantalizing terms and provocative medical diagrams. We?re all safe from the filth for now, but if terms like breast begin to pop up, ?it?s bound to be the old slippery slope to medically accurate pornography?and immodesty is far more dangerous than cancer could ever be.

Valencia beats Levante 4-1 in Copa del Rey

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:56 p.m. ET Jan. 19, 2012

VALENCIA, Spain (AP) -Valencia took a commanding lead in its Copa del Rey quarterfinal against Levante with a 4-1 home win over its crosstown rival in the first leg on Thursday.

After Levante playmaker Jose Barkero had to be replaced after just 10 minutes with an apparent leg problem, Valencia capitalized on a pair of errors to quickly go up 2-0 at Mestalla stadium.

The hosts recovered a ball inside Levante's half in the 24th for Jonas to tuck Pablo Hernandez's pass under goalkeeper Keylor Navas. Attack partner Roberto Soldado then added the second in the 31st when he tapped in a poor clearance by Javi Venta in front of the net.

Striker Arouna Kone scored in the 37th with a blast from the edge of the area to pull one back for Levante against the run of play, but Pablo Piatti re-established Valencia's cushion for good just before halftime when he reached Pablo's diagonal pass behind the defense and flicked it home.

The second half saw more bookings than scoring chances as tempers rose in the derby until Valencia midfielder Tino Costa scored in added time with a shot that took a deflection off a defender before falling behind substitute goalkeeper Gustavo Munua.

"The last goal gives us a good chance to get through the knockout series," said Soldado, who took his scoring tally in all competitions this season to 19. "Scoring away had given them hope, so our last goal is worth double."

The winner of the series will face either Barcelona or Real Madrid in the semifinals. Barcelona won 2-1 at Madrid in their first leg.

On the other side of the bracket, Athletic Bilbao downed Mallorca 2-0 at home, while Espanyol rallied to beat third-tier Mirandes 3-2 earlier this week.

The return legs will be played next week.

The Nike+ FuelBand measures activity in NikeFuel, ready for your NikeLife

While Nike might have beat competitors like the MotoACTV and Jawbone Up to the active bracelet market over two years ago, its original endeavor, the Nike+ SportBand, was getting long in the tooth. That changes today with the introduction of the far sleeker Nike+ FuelBand. It's much in the vein of the original, except boasts a more attractive 20 LED dot-matrix display and can measure activity in a new unit the company calls NikeFuel. That latter bit is a normalized score that unlike calories "awards equal points for the same activity regardless of physical makeup." We'll have to see about that, but we're definitively smitten with its design and that row of colorful LEDs that progressively fills as one gets closer to reaching their intended goal. The $149 pre-orders go live on the company's online store at 5PM ET, but those interested ought to peep the PR and video after the break.

Virginia Marked as Potential Nomination-Sealer (ContributorNetwork)

ANALYSIS | In the 2012 race for the presidency, the Commonwealth of Virginia stands poised to become a massively scrutinized indicator of the future direction of the country, as the establishment candidate Mitt Romney and his antithesis, Ron Paul, engage in a primary showdown.

Thanks to the Fourth U.S. Court of Appeals, the other four Republican hopefuls, Jon Huntsman (who has now pulled out of the race), Rick Santorum, Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich, will remain off the ballot, due to failures to comply with ballot access requirements. As such, the Virginia vote becomes ever-important, as the result will greatly impact the process for both Romney and Paul.

Virginia, a state with a highly-decorated military background, is speculated to favor Paul, the only veteran on the ballot. However, the major factor in his surge within the commonwealth is the growing disenfranchisement with the establishment. Paul represents the opposite frame of mind and has brought a more common-sense approach to governing -- a breath of fresh air to many in the political landscape.

With the recent acknowledgement that nearly 84 percent of Americans are disapproving of the current Congress and its legislative habits, according to a Washington Post/ABC News poll, the spark of revolutionary thinking Paul has brought to the political table has reached flame-like proportions.

Though many have considered the race to be between the two candidates all along, sources for the remaining candidates claim their runs are far from over. However, looking realistically, Romney and Paul, despite the mainstream media's continued blackout on the latter, are set up to be the final combatants in the Republican battle for supremacy. Virginia, whether they choose to believe so, or not, stands as the decisive battleground. Judging by the results of already-completed primaries, a close result is almost a certainty.

The winner, though not out of the woods, will have more obstacles to hurdle. He who should reach the nomination, in a battle against President Obama (the first Democrat to win Virginia in more than 40 years), will face an intense buffer, as the President has recently sent his campaign troops to begin preparations for another shot at winning the commonwealth. This leaves Virginia, once again, in the spotlight as a driving force behind "Decision 2012."

In a campaign season wrought with controversy, the fact remains that the people of the United States are faced with the most important decision of their lives. Their choice, to remain with the political establishment or to "reboot" the federal government with an outsider, will have intrinsic effects, regardless of the outcome.

John Mayer back in spotlight, strumming new guitar (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? When Grammy-winning singer John Mayer returns to the musical spotlight in 2012, he's going to let his guitar do his talking. And not just any guitar, it will be a new limited edition, 12-fret acoustic made by C.F. Martin & Co.

Mayer and Martin & Co. will unveil the six-string guitar, of which only 25 will be made, on Wednesday at the National Association of Music Merchants annual gathering in Anaheim, California, south of Los Angeles.

"There's something about a smaller-bodied acoustic guitar that has always appealed to me," Mayer said in a statement. "I was inspired to return to a completely natural way of writing and recording music, and at the center of that vision were the Martin 00-sized guitars that defined an era of brilliant songwriting in the '60s and '70s."

Mayer, the soulful singer whose hits include "Your Body is a Wonderland" and "Daughters," is returning to the media spotlight from a hiatus that followed a high-profile relationship with Jennifer Aniston and a controversial interview with Playboy magazine in which he was criticized for comments that some considered racist. He later publicly apologized for those statements.

Since then, the singer has flown under the celebrity tabloid radar, but he has a new album, "Born and Raised," due later this year. His appearance at NAMM with the new Martin guitar brings Mayer back to his musician's roots.

The 00-45SC John Mayer Stagecoach Edition features a 12-fret range and will be made from premium rosewood and Adirondack spruce. Each guitar will feature an interior label personally signed by Mayer and numbered in sequence. The guitars have a suggested retail price of $13,999.

Gingrich calls Romney, Bain Capital 'exploitive' (AP)

COLUMBIA, S.C. ? Republican candidate Newt Gingrich on Tuesday leveled a forceful new attack on Mitt Romney, calling the GOP front-runner's former private equity firm "exploitive."

Gingrich had attacked Bain Capital before, but his comments before a gathering of business leaders in Columbia contained some of his harshest rhetoric yet and came just four days before the South Carolina primary, a critical benchmark for the Gingrich campaign.

After lagging behind in the Iowa causes and the New Hampshire primary, Gingrich is hoping a strong showing in the nation's first Southern primary will re-energize his White House bid.

Gingrich gained an endorsement of sorts from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the party's vice presidential nominee in 2008. The Fox News contributor told the network Tuesday night that she would vote for Gingrich in the South Carolina primary if she could to extend the GOP primary race and help the candidates become fully vetted.

"Iron sharpens iron, steel sharpens steel," Palin said. "In order to keep this thing going, I'd vote for Newt."

Gingrich was holding little back in his criticism of Romney, saying that, in at least some instances, the Bain model has meant "leverage the game, borrow the money, leave the debt behind and walk off with all the profits."

"Now, I'll let you decide if that's really good capitalism. I think it's exploitive. I think it's not defensible," he said.

Gingrich continued that what Romney engaged in "is not venture capital."

"Venture capital is when you go in and put in your capital and you stick it out," he said.

Gingrich has faced rebuke in some quarters as attacking the GOP bedrock of free enterprise in his criticism of Romney and Bain. But he argued Tuesday that raising questions about Romney's track record at Bain should not be confused with an attack on capitalism.

"I'm proud of real capitalists. I'm proud of guys who say to their workers I'm in it with you. If I lose money and you lose a job we lost together because we both tried," he said.

Earlier in the day Gingrich said at a town hall meeting in West Columbia that a Muslim-American seeking office in the U.S. would have to publicly renounce Islamic law to receive his backing.

When asked if he could support a Muslim for office, the former House speaker replied that it "would depend entirely on whether the person would commit in public to give up sharia," or Islamic law.

Gingrich said he is totally opposed to Islamic law and supports a federal law that would pre-empt it.

"A truly modern person who worshipped Allah would not be a threat," he said.

Analysts mull impact of accident on cruise sector (AP)

NEW YORK ? Shares of cruise operators declined on Tuesday, with analysts questioning whether the capsizing of a Carnival Corp. vessel would hurt travel demand just at the start of the important bookings season.

The Friday night capsizing of the Costa Concordia off a Tuscan island has left at least 11 people dead, according to the latest reports on Tuesday.

Greg Badishkanian of Citi Investment Research said in a client note that the accident could be an overhang on shares of Carnival and rival Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., as it took place during the cruise industry's busiest booking period of January through March, commonly known as wave season.

Badishkanian said that cruise booking volumes likely fell 6 percent to 10 percent over the past few days but stressed that the decline is within normal day-to-day volatility.

Pricing is still firm and there has been no material increase in cancellations, he added, "which means there is no major passenger fear of cruising thus far."

But Badishkanian says that negative press surrounding the capsizing is not helping, as pictures and videos are more graphic and widespread than previous cruise incidents.

"The media coverage could also be prolonged as the 100-year anniversary of the Titanic is in three months," he added.

In two separate reports, Susquehanna Financial Group's Rachael Rothman lowered the ratings of Carnival and Royal Caribbean, both based in Miami, to "Neutral" from "Positive." She also reduced Carnival's price target to $29 from $40 and cut Royal Caribbean's price target to $26 from $39.

The analyst said that the bad press will probably "be a severe headwind to bookings in the months ahead," adding that wave season can make up close to about 35 percent of annual bookings.

Carnival's stock slid $4.73, or 13.8 percent, to $29.55 in afternoon trading. The stock is trading at the low end of its 52-week range of $28.52 to $48.13. Shares of Royal Caribbean fell $1.03, or 3.6 percent, to $27.72.

Rock Hall of Fame opens archives to public (AP)

CLEVELAND ? The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum opened its new library and archives to the public on Tuesday to give scholars and fans access to the stories behind the music through such "artifacts" as personal letters from Madonna and Aretha Franklin and 1981-82 video of the Rolling Stones tour.

The collection, catalogued over the last few years, includes more than 3,500 books, 1,400 audio recordings and 270 videos, and is housed in the new four-story, $12 million building.

Thousands more books and recordings and hundreds of videos will be added as previously stored items and new donations are catalogued, said Andy Leach, director of the library and archives.

"We hope to serve music scholars, teachers, students and the general public," Leach said. "We hope to see all of them here."

Tuesday's opening of the building on the Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, not far from the Rock Hall, occurred without a lot of fanfare. The low-key opening allows the public to enjoy the library before a grand opening April 9. The college funded the building and the Rock Hall financed construction and furnishings of its interior.

The library also offers photos, albums and covers, oral histories and scrap books.

Leach said the Rock Hall has done a great job of telling the story of rock `n' roll. He said he sees the library as bringing the museum more recognition and showing "it to be a serious place of research."

The library collection also includes movie posters, photos and memorabilia related to Alan Freed, the DJ credited with coining the phrase rock `n' roll; a handwritten list by Elvis Presley of songs included in one of his concerts; and personal letters from Mick Jagger.

Visitors will not be allowed to check out items, but anyone can use the library reading room to browse through books, listen to audio recordings and watch videos. A smaller archives reading room allows supervised access to certain items.

Steve Waksman, an associate professor of music and American studies at Smith College in Massachusetts, did research at the library prior to its opening for his book on the history of American live music.

"It was very useful, with material that I haven't found anywhere else," Waksman said Tuesday. "They had a lot of material regarding the stage sets of music performers from the `60s and the `70s, such as David Bowie and the Rolling Stones."

Elizabeth Papp Taylor, 53, of Shaker Heights, was at the library opening day.

"I'm looking forward to coming back for a look at the archives, but my first visit was exciting," she said in a phone interview. "It's very impressive."
