Business phone systems continue to improve the way business communicates, and also continues to provide a range of services that were not available only a few short years ago. VOIP (Voice/Video Over Internet Protocol) is an application (software) and internet-based service. Without the internet, and without the advancements in those software applications, we would not have these services. VOIP communications have had a bad reputation for a long time.
The main reason being call quality, and the high-potential for drop-outs. This is rarely the case, and there are a number of reasons for that. Apart from the fact that we are seeing better internet connections, there are more reason related to the devices we are using, the operating systems of our computers, and applications themselves.
Applications
Skype was the company and the application that really changed the way VOIP technologies improved. Skype took a radically different approach to the way VOIP communications are transmitted through the internet. Skype introduced peer-to-peer sharing of the transmission of VOIP communications. This means when you are making a VOIP call or video call, the tiny packets of information being transmitted through the internet, are being scattered among all the other users of Skype at that time.
Your call could be going through 1000, or even 1 million other users, before it is put back together at the other end of your call. More users of the application means better call quality. Many other applications, and those used in business phone systems have taken advantage of this.
Devices
Our personal computer, and our smartphones are faster and smarter than ever. Without getting to complicated, the personal computer has seen a huge change in recent years. In the past, we only had ROM (Read Only Memory) and RAM (Random Access Memory). ROM was the basics of your processor, and RAM is like the flash or current memory of your personal computer.
Now personal computers are very sophisticated, to include PRAM (Parameter Random Access Memory ? the biggest advantage of Macintosh computers) and PROM (Programmable Read Only Memory), which is very difficult to actually understand. It is ROM memory that is programmed after the chips are manufactured. The chips are built with fuses, and those fuses are programmed (burnt) in the final process of manufacture. Further to all of this, we have seen huge developments and a resurgence in ARM (ARM Holdings) processors. ARM processors use simplified instruction sets meaning they can get more done and use less power at the same time. All smartphones and tablets use ARM technology.
Operating Systems
Operating systems that can run on SoC (System on Chip) have made tablets and smartphones possible. Your smartphone does not have a hard drive, nor does your tablet. We will see a boom in these devices with the release of the Windows 8 operating system, because it will work on your smartphone, tablet and personal computer. It is the first operating system to be able to do this. At the same time, the Mac OS (personal computers) and the Mac iOS (iPhone and iPad) operating systems continue to be very stable, bug free and run super-smooth.
Faster and better devices, applications and operating systems are just as important as super-fast internet connections. We have them all available, and they are about to get a whole lot better.
